Today I was reflecting on the most recent Gallery Walk we held with the seniors and our Hwarang chapter members. It perfectly crystallized why I started the art project in the first place: communication isn't always about perfect sentences; sometimes, it's about shared effort and acceptance of imperfection.

When we first started visiting the senior living community, I went in with the expectation of sparking conversations about life. I quickly realized that simply talking wasn't the best way to communicate with many residents. Either due to health or isolation, the usual doors to conversation were often shut.

The Power of the Image:

I took inspiration from my past art therapy experience and believed art could be the bridge. We developed a simple activity, and the difference it made was immediate. As the residents drew each line or snipped the paper, I saw immense joy and perseverance.

The most profound realization came from the imperfections. If a line was wobbly or a color was outside the lines, that "mistake" became a point of connection and even a good laugh for all of us. I realized that these imperfections were each individual's unique flair of personality.

The Full Circle:

Slowly but surely, the art itself opened the door to conversation. We began learning about each other's stories through the art and over the art. The relationship started without words and was then completed by them.

Now, a full year into this endeavor, our chapter members have formed deep, meaningful relationships with the residents. The Gallery Walk wasn't just about celebrating our handiwork; it was a way to look back at the shared conversations and the trust that grew from a single sheet of paper.

This work taught me that the art of making art is fundamentally about creating a harmonious space where people feel safe enough to express themselves, flaws and all. That vulnerability, whether verbal or visual, is the key to deep human connection. I hope my chapter continues this legacy.
